(Poles and brackets installed and SID operational from 5th July 2023.)
This is another measure to assist in SPC’s efforts to improve the safety of residents and visitors to our parish. It reminds drivers to reduce speed. The SID will be moved to the opposite direction or between locations as data collected indicates.
It was a requirement of housing developers to contribute towards road safety measures in Staplehurst and that monies be set aside for that sole purpose. Consultations between the Parish Council Road Safety Group and KCC Highways Officers recommended to Full Council to accept the moveable SID system at no cost to the Parish Council. The equipment would be included into the existing PC insurance.
KCC Officers inspected several sites within the village and rejected some as unsuitable on the grounds of safety for persons attending to the signs, to road users or pedestrians, of obstructing existing street furniture and of being on too busy road. Three sites have been approved; Headcorn Road, Marden Road and Bathurst Road.
The SID display at present is set to indicate speeds of 27 to 40 mph. This is so as not to encourage reckless driving at speeds above this. The data collected and downloaded however, will indicate all speeds of vehicles passing and this can be used to inform the Parish Council and be forwarded to other authorities.
